Equipment Overview
The Barihabâ„¢ Parallel Bar System is an adaptable attachment that integrates with the Barihabâ„¢ Treatment and Assessment Platform. It includes:
- Two stainless-steel adjustable parallel bars
- Moveable safety seat with glide track
- Receiver bars and locking levers
- Rolling storage cart
The system allows for variable height and width adjustment to accommodate patients of different sizes and therapy needs.
Please note: Ensure your ceiling height is at least 8 feet to allow enough clearance for safe lifting and installation.
Safety Warnings
- Never lower the platform while the parallel bar knobs or levers are tightened. Doing so may damage the bars or table.
- Always position locking levers on the outside of the bars to prevent interference with the patient’s movement.
- Do not leave a patient unattended while using the parallel bars or safety seat.
- The safety seat is not a reclined chair — it is an emergency support seat to prevent falls.
- Ensure all receivers and leg supports are securely locked before use.
Setup Procedure
Step 1 – Preparation
- Ensure the Barihabâ„¢ table is powered on and in the lowered position.
- Move the parallel bar cart near the platform.
- Confirm that all transfer bars are removed from the table.
Step 2 – Remove Transfer Bars
- Detach both transfer bars from the table and place them into the stowaway receiver bars located on the outside of the unit.
- This will expose two open receiver mounts on each side of the table:
- Inside receivers for narrower patients
- Outside receivers for wider patients
Step 3 – Install Parallel Bars
- Lift each parallel bar upright.
- Insert the ends of the bars into the selected receiver mounts.
- Lock each bar in place by tightening the receiver clamps.
- Loosen the bar’s height adjustment legs but keep them unlocked for height calibration.
Step 4 – Adjust Table and Bar Height
- Raise or lower the Barihabâ„¢ platform using the electronic control until the bars reach the desired height.
- The digital height indicator on the Barihab™ display corresponds to the top of the mat — record this for future reference.
- Once at the correct height, gently lift each bar upward to preload tension, then tighten the locking lever to secure.
Using the Parallel Bars
Patient Setup
- Assist the patient into standing position using standard transfer techniques.
- Allow the patient to grasp the bars for balance and support.
- Adjust spacing or height if necessary for proper ergonomics.
Using the Safety Seat
- Slide the safety seat onto the parallel bars.
- Position it just behind the patient.
- During gait training or step practice:
- Move the seat forward along the bars as the patient progresses.
- The therapist should remain close in case the patient needs to sit quickly.
- Remind the patient: the seat is for support only, not for resting back against.
End-of-Session Transfer
- At the end of treatment, have a wheelchair or walker positioned at the far end of the bars.
- Assist the patient to pivot and sit safely.
Disassembly and Storage
- Remove the Safety Seat
- Pull the glide arms outward to release from the bars.
- Place on its designated storage cart.
- Remove the Parallel Bars
- Unlock each bar leg and raise it fully.
- Re-lock the leg to hold it upright.
- Unlock the receiver clamps and remove each bar from the table.
- Stand the bars upright and walk them to the storage cart.
- Proper Storage Orientation
- Insert each bar into the cart receiver slots.
- Ensure the safety warning stickers face outward (toward the user).
- This orientation confirms correct stowage and prevents confusion at next setup.
- Final Check
- Confirm all parts are secure on the cart.
- Return the Barihabâ„¢ platform to a flat, neutral position.
Maintenance & Inspection
- Inspect bars and receiver locks weekly for damage or debris.
- Wipe down stainless steel and vinyl components with approved antibacterial cleaner after each session.
- Ensure warning labels remain visible and leg mechanisms function smoothly.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Likely Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Bars wobble during use | Locking levers not tightened | Re-tighten both receiver and height levers |
| Bars uneven | Table height uneven or legs not level | Reset platform height, adjust both legs equally |
| Seat not gliding smoothly | Track debris or misalignment | Clean rails and ensure alignment in both bars |
| Table won’t raise/lower with bars | Knobs tightened | Loosen knobs before adjusting platform |
Training & Competency
All therapists or clinicians must complete the Therapeutic Industries in-service training upon installation or before first use.
Training includes:
- Installation and removal of bars
- Correct adjustment for patient size
- Proper supervision and seat usage
- Review of all warning labels and safety procedures
